Why Spaying and Neutering Rabbits is Important

A pleasant bunny who was spayed

When we think of having a pet spayed or neutered, small animals, such as rabbits, probably don’t come to mind. Many people are surprised to learn that spaying and neutering rabbits is actually in their best interest. Similar to dogs and cats, having a rabbit “fixed” supports health, longevity, and can make life more pleasant for your bunny (and for you).

The Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Rabbits

Altered rabbits enjoy a wide range of health and behavioral benefits, including:

Increased lifespan – Spaying and neutering your rabbit will reduce his or her risk of developing reproductive cancers (ovarian, uterine, mammary, and testicular), leading to improved overall health.

Better behavior – The onset of sexual maturity (somewhere between the age of 3 to 8 months) often brings with it undesirable behaviors, such as spraying, biting, lunging, or destructive digging and chewing. Spaying or neutering usually reduces these tendencies in adult rabbits, making them easier to train and more fun to be around.

Greater enrichment – Rabbits are social animals that enjoy the company of other rabbits, but unless they are altered, it’s unwise to put two rabbits together due to sexual and aggressive behaviors. Having your pet altered means that he or she can have a friend to play with, which will greatly improve his or her quality of life.

Finding a forever home for a baby rabbit is not simple, because most people don’t realize how long rabbits can live or don’t understand what is involved in their care. Each year, thousands of adoptable rabbits are euthanized at animal shelters and abandoned in fields, parks, and along roadsides. By having your rabbit spayed or neutered, you are having a positive impact on the serious problem of rabbit overpopulation.

Is the Surgery Safe?

Spaying and neutering rabbits is generally very safe as long as an experienced veterinarian is performing the surgery. Here at Pets in Stitches, we regularly perform spay and neuter surgeries on rabbits of all ages, and are happy to discuss with you the benefits and risks associated with the procedures.
