Before Surgery

ADMISSION FORMS
You may stop by Pets In Stitches prior to your pets' scheduled surgery day and pick up the Admissions Form to save time the morning of surgery, or download from our website and complete. Once you and your pet’s information are entered, you will review and sign the Surgery & Ancillary Services Consent Form.

FEEDING

  • If your pet is over four months old, do not allow them to eat any food after midnight the night before surgery. If your pet accidentally eats the morning of surgery, let us know at drop-off.
  • If your pet is less than four months old, feed them a normal meal between 6 to 8 A.M. the day of surgery.
  • Water should be available at all times.

FLEA CONTROL

  • Treat existing fleas. Veterinarian approved flea and tick preventives (i.e.: ProMeris, Advantage, Frontline, Revolution, Capstar, Advantix) are safe to apply prior to surgery.
  • All patients with live fleas will be administered a Capstar tablet at a cost of $5.
  • MEDICATIONS: If your pet is on a long term medication (i.e. phenobarbital, prednisone, insulin), contact us or your regular veterinarian prior to surgery to determine if your pet should receive the medication the day of the procedure.

SENIOR PETS: If your pet is over 10 years of age, Pets In Stitches requires pre-surgical bloodwork to minimize surgical and anesthetic complications.

NURSING MOTHERS

  • For nursing dogs, be sure that lactating dog has been separated from their puppies for at least two weeks before the day of surgery. The presence of milk in the mammary glands increases the risk of infection and delayed healing.
  • For nursing cats, be sure that the kittens are at least six weeks old and eating kitten food. Lactating cats may undergo a flank spay where the reproductive organs are removed though an incision on the side of the abdomen rather than the underside. This minimizes complications that milk production at the surgical site can cause.

Surgery Day

Arrive at Pets In Stitches between 7:30 to 8:30 A.M. and bring all documents, including vaccine certificates. (Trapped cats, also known as free-roaming cats, are an exception to this rule. See FREE-ROAMING CATS for more information.)

Dogs must be on a leash or in a carrier. Take your dog for walk before you arrive as they will be in a kennel all day. Bring a bag to pick up waste.

Cats must be in a carrier, a container with a secured lid and a breathing hole, or pillowcase. Cats may be together in one carrier for admissions. However, you must still bring sufficient carriers for each cat to go home individually. Cardboard carriers can be purchased from us for a minimum cost.

When you arrive, come inside and leave your pet in the car until you have completed all paperwork.

We will collect payment next. We appreciate cash but also accept credit and debit cards. Pets In Stitches does not accept personal checks.

If pre-approved for surgery, your pet will be taken into the surgical preparation area, your carrier returned to you, and then you may leave. If your pet shows signs of illness or if there are any concerns) we may refuse surgery. If the veterinarian examines your pet and decides not to perform the scheduled surgery, you will be contacted to return and pick up your pet.

After Surgery

Patients are released between 4:00 and 5:00 P.M. on the same day of surgery.

You will receive Postoperative Care Instructions and applicable medications. You will be told of any conditions or medical issues the veterinarian may have found during examination which may require follow up at a full service veterinary clinic.

If your pet was vaccinated and has never been vaccinated before, your pet must have the vaccines repeated in three to four weeks (other than the rabies vaccine). Take your pet and your vaccine paperwork to your regular veterinarian.

Postoperative Complications & Emergencies

Pets In Stitches will re-check your pet at no charge for any complications resulting directly from surgery. There may be a minimal cost for medications if needed or an Elizabethan collar.

If you have a non-emergency question or concern or would like to have your pet re-checked by one of our veterinarians, call (937) 630-3320 during regular business hours (Monday through Thursday 7:30 A.M. to 6 P.M.).

If your pet requires emergency care outside of Pets In Stitches’ normal business hours, call our emergency telephone at (937) 903-3195 during emergency phone hours (Monday through Saturday 7 A.M. to 10 P.M. ).

If your pet requires emergency care for a life-threatening situation that does not fall within Pets In Stitches emergency phone hours, call or visit your regular veterinarian or local emergency veterinary clinic. If you do not have a regular veterinarian, you can refer to Pets In Stitches’ Veterinarian Registry.

Emergency clinics in the Miami Valley area:

Each client is responsible for paying the cost of this visit directly to their veterinarian or the emergency veterinary clinic. Pets In Stitches will review the medical report and discuss the visit with the emergency veterinarian to determine if the visit was related to spay or neuter surgery. If Pets In Stitches determines that the incident is a spay or neuter surgery related visit and the postoperative care instructions were followed, we will reimburse our clients the cost of the visit. Pets In Stitches veterinarians make the final decision on what will be covered.
