The eyes are said to be the windows to the soul, and anyone who has stared into the deep, warm eyes of an animal friend can testify to that.

Eye problems are not uncommon in pets, which is why Pets in Stitches is sure to offer several pet eye surgeries to help our patients. Keep reading to find out what we have to offer and why it’s so important to us.

Pet Eye Surgeries

When your pet needs an eye surgery, you want to be confident in your pet’s veterinary surgeon. We provide high quality pet eye surgeries, so that you pet can receive the treatment they need to keep them healthy and happy.  These include:

Enucleation – Enucleation is the medical term for removing the eyeball itself. While preserving the eye is everyone’s goal, sometimes injury, infection, cancer, or disease processes, such as glaucoma, can render an eye painful and a source of perpetual problems. During an eye enucleation, the globe is removed, leaving behind the rest of the contents of the orbit. The eyelids are then sewn shut for a good cosmetic result.

Cherry eye repair – All dogs and cats have a third eyelid, known at the nictitating membrane, that comes up from the inner corner of the eye from time to time. This third eyelid also houses a gland that is responsible for secreting part of the normal tear film. Sometimes this gland pops out (prolapses) and will not return under the eyelid.

This permanent prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid, known as a cherry eye, results in a red structure at the inner part of the pet’s eye. Untreated, this can lead to decreased tear production and chronic dry eye. During a cherry eye repair surgery the gland is tucked back in place and sewn into a pocket of tissue created in the third eyelid, in order to prevent it from prolapsing again. Due to the somewhat genetic nature of this condition, it is not unusual for both eyes to be affected.

Entropion/ectropion surgery – Entropion and ectropion refer to the rolling in or rolling out of the eyelids, respectively. These conditions can lead to problems, such as chronic corneal irritation, and can be corrected surgically by taking out loose skin around the affected lid. How’s that for a puppy facelift?
