Whether you’re a new client or you’ve been bringing your pet in to see us for years, you’re probably aware of the compassionate care and high level of service your pet receives each and every time they Pets In Stitches. However, did you know that in addition to being a state-of-the-art medical facility, we’re also a veterinary technology and veterinary assistant teaching hospital primarily for Sinclair Community College?
What is a Veterinary Teaching Program?
A veterinary teaching program is similar in many ways to a standard veterinary hospital. Consultations and procedures are still provided by veterinarians and support staff, but a service program takes on the additional role of teaching students who are currently enrolled in a veterinary technology or veterinary assistant degree program.
The students learn how to:
- safely interact with pets,
- obtain medical history information from pet parents,
- provide grooming care,
- prevent transmission of disease,
- fill prescriptions,
- administer medications and treatments,
- perform laboratory work,
- Comply with federal and local laws,
- provide surgical assistance,
- and manage anesthesia.
Myths and Misconceptions
Common misconceptions regarding teaching programs include:
My pet will receive substandard care at a veterinary teaching location. Many pet owners are concerned that having a veterinary technology or veterinary assistant student will affect the quality of their pet’s care. If anything, the opposite is true! Not only does working with students hold our staff to a higher standard of performance, but we must always be up-to-date on current practices in order to answer their questions and provide them with a quality educational experience.
Veterinarians in a teaching program will have less time to answer my questions. While it’s true that teaching does take time, it absolutely does not take time away from our patients and clients. Instructional discussions occur before or after we meet your needs! Hearing information regarding your pet’s health from multiple team members can be particularly helpful when it comes to understanding your pet’s needs.
